Jorge Masvidal protagonizó junto a Kamaru Usman lo que fue el combate estelar del primer UFC Island, un evento realizado el pasado fin de semana en Abu Dabi. Originalmente, Usman defendería el cinturón de peso wélter ante Gilbert Burns, pero Burns dio positivo a Covid-19 por lo que se vio forzado a salir de la cartelera.
Masvidal aceptó entrar como reemplazo de Burns con tan solo 6 días de anticipación, y aunque al final Usman lo venció por decisión unánime, la presencia de Masvidal atrajo la atención de los fans. Esto se vio reflejado en las ventas de PPV, las cuales llegaron a los 1,3 millones.
El presidente del UFC, Dana White, recientemente estuvo hablando con los medios acerca de Masvidal y de cómo el haber tenido a Jorge en el combate principal, a la larga contribuyó a que el UFC 251 fuera un éxito (vía MMANews):
Dana White: "Chicos, se los dije la otra noche, cuando tienes una pelea, cuando promueves un evento, eso es una gran mezcla de diferentes cosas. 'Fight Island' fue una estrella enorme. Masvidal es una estrella enorme. Obviamente, Usman, es el campeón y el sujeto del que todos empezamos a darnos cuenta de que es difícil de vencer, y una gran cartelera".
"Todo se unió perfectamente. Fue un gran éxito. Todos están sanos. Todo está bien. Literalmente no hay algo negativo que pueda señalar".
(Texto en inglés): "I said it to you guys the other night, when you put on a fight, a successful promotion of an event, it's a big melting pot of different things," White explained. "'Fight Island' was a massive star in this thing. Masvidal is a massive star. Obviously, Usman, the champion and a guy that we're all start to realize is tough to beat and a great card underneath.
"It all came together perfectly. It was a major success. Everybody's healthy. It's all good. Literally not one negative thing that I could point out."
